PTFE O Ring Seals for Cryogenic and High-Temperature Service

Extreme temperature working conditions including ultra-low temperature cryogenic environments and long-term high-temperature industrial operation are major challenges for traditional sealing components. Most elastomer O-rings will become hard and brittle at low temperatures, losing elasticity and sealing performance, while they will soften, deform and age rapidly at high temperatures, resulting in sealing failure. PTFE O-ring seals have ultra-wide temperature resistance and stable physical and mechanical properties, which can adapt to extreme cryogenic and high-temperature service environments, and are indispensable core sealing components for extreme temperature industrial equipment PTFE SHEET.

In cryogenic service scenarios such as liquid nitrogen, liquid oxygen, liquefied natural gas storage and transportation, and ultra-low temperature laboratory equipment, the operating temperature is as low as -196°C. Traditional rubber and plastic seals will undergo brittle fracture and complete loss of sealing elasticity under ultra-low temperature impact, leading to medium leakage and equipment failure. PTFE O-rings maintain excellent toughness, elasticity and structural stability at ultra-low cryogenic temperatures, without brittle hardening and cracking. Their low-temperature dimensional stability ensures that the sealing size does not shrink abnormally, always maintaining accurate gap fitting and stable sealing performance, which fully meets the long-term sealing requirements of cryogenic storage and transportation equipment.

In high-temperature service environments such as high-temperature steam pipelines, thermal power equipment, high-temperature reaction kettles, and industrial heating systems, continuous high temperature will accelerate the aging and deformation of ordinary seals. Most sealing materials will fail rapidly above 150°C, while high-quality PTFE O-rings can operate continuously and stably at 260°C, and can withstand instantaneous high-temperature impact above 300°C. Under long-term high-temperature working conditions, PTFE O-rings will not soften, melt, deform or age and deteriorate, maintaining stable compression resilience and sealing tightness. Matched with high-temperature resistant PTFE TUBE accessories, it forms a complete extreme temperature resistant sealing system to ensure the safe operation of high-temperature industrial equipment.

In addition to single low-temperature or high-temperature resistance, PTFE O-rings have excellent temperature cycle resistance, which can adapt to alternating working conditions of extreme cold and extreme heat. In industrial equipment that frequently switches between cryogenic cooling and high-temperature heating, traditional seals are prone to fatigue failure due to thermal expansion and contraction repeatedly. PTFE materials have small thermal expansion coefficient and stable molecular structure, which can resist temperature cycle fatigue, without performance attenuation and structural damage after thousands of temperature changes. At the same time, it retains excellent chemical corrosion resistance, and can still resist medium erosion in extreme temperature environments, realizing dual stability of temperature resistance and corrosion resistance.

PTFE extreme temperature resistant O-rings are widely used in liquefied gas storage and transportation equipment, cryogenic refrigeration systems, aerospace extreme temperature equipment, high-temperature thermal power pipelines, chemical high-temperature reaction equipment, and new energy temperature cycle devices. Industrial application data shows that PTFE O-rings have far longer service life and higher operation stability than traditional seals in extreme temperature service environments, effectively solving the industry pain point of easy failure of temperature-sensitive sealing components, and providing reliable sealing protection for extreme temperature industrial systems.
