Post-Molding Annealing Effects on Dimensional Stability in PTFE Compression Molding

Compression-molded PTFE products inevitably produce residual internal stress during cold pressing, high-temperature sintering, and rapid cooling processes. This hidden residual stress will be slowly released during long-term storage, processing, and service, resulting in dimensional shrinkage, warpage deformation, structural distortion, and precision failure of PTFE components, which seriously affects the assembly accuracy and service reliability of high-precision equipment. Post-molding annealing treatment is an essential precision optimization process for compression-molded PTFE products. Through reasonable high-temperature annealing and slow heat preservation process, it can effectively eliminate residual stress, stabilize molecular structure, and significantly improve the long-term dimensional stability of molded products PTFE SHEET.

The core mechanism of annealing improving dimensional stability is stress relief and molecular structure regularization. After compression molding and sintering, the internal molecular chains of PTFE are in an unstable oriented state, accompanied by uneven internal stress distribution. Post-molding annealing treatment heats the product to a reasonable temperature below the melting point, activates PTFE molecular chains, promotes disordered molecular rearrangement, and makes the internal stress release fully and uniformly. After annealing and slow cooling, the molecular structure tends to be stable and balanced, eliminating the potential risk of later dimensional deformation caused by stress release. Products without annealing treatment are prone to slow deformation and size drift after long-term placement, while annealed products maintain stable dimensional accuracy for a long time.

Annealing temperature and holding time are the key parameters affecting stress relief effect and dimensional stability. Excessively low annealing temperature cannot activate molecular chains completely, resulting in insufficient stress relief and poor stability improvement. Excessively high temperature close to the melting point will cause secondary thermal deformation of the product and destroy the molded precision structure. Industrial optimized annealing temperature is controlled between 200°C and 280°C, which can effectively activate molecular movement without causing structural deformation. Sufficient holding time ensures uniform stress relief inside thick products, avoiding local residual stress retention. Combined with ultra-slow furnace cooling, it realizes overall structural stabilization of PTFE products PTFE TUBE.

Annealing treatment also optimizes the uniform shrinkage performance of compression-molded PTFE products. Unannealed molded products have inconsistent internal and external shrinkage rates, and the shrinkage degree is affected by residual stress and molecular orientation, resulting in irregular dimensional changes. After standardized annealing, the shrinkage coefficient of all parts of the product tends to be consistent, and the dimensional change rule is stable and predictable, which is convenient for precision size compensation in the early molding stage. This is particularly important for high-precision PTFE sealing parts, insulating gaskets, and mechanical transmission components that require long-term stable assembly accuracy.

In addition to improving dimensional stability, post-molding annealing also optimizes the comprehensive physical properties of PTFE products. Annealed products have more uniform internal structure, lower void rate, better wear resistance and fatigue resistance, and can maintain stable performance under long-term alternating temperature and mechanical load. The surface flatness and structural flatness of molded parts are significantly improved, reducing the rejection rate caused by post-molding deformation.

In summary, post-molding annealing is an indispensable finishing process for high-quality compression-molded PTFE products. It fundamentally solves the industry pain point of unstable dimensional accuracy caused by residual stress, greatly improves the long-term service stability and batch consistency of PTFE components, and provides reliable technical support for the manufacturing of high-precision and high-reliability PTFE industrial parts.
