Flow Characteristics of ASTM D4894 PTFE Fine Powders for Ram Extrusion

Ram extrusion is the core molding process for producing long-length, uniform-diameter PTFE products such as PTFE tubes, rods, and continuous insulation strips. Different from compression molding, ram extrusion has extremely strict requirements on powder flow uniformity, particle fluidity, and pressure transmission stability. Unstable powder flow characteristics will lead to product diameter deviation, wall thickness unevenness, internal layered defects, and extrusion interruption. ASTM D4894 standard specially defines the flow characteristics and grading standards of PTFE fine powders for ram extrusion, optimizing powder performance parameters to adapt to continuous extrusion production and ensuring the stability and consistency of extrusion molding PTFE SHEET.

ASTM D4894 classifies special fine powder grades suitable for ram extrusion production, with standardized particle size, bulk density, and particle fluidity indicators. The fine powder grades specified by the standard have uniform particle dispersion, no agglomeration, and stable free-flowing performance, which can realize continuous and uniform feeding in ram extrusion equipment. Stable powder flow ensures consistent material density and pressure in the extrusion cylinder, avoiding periodic fluctuation of extrusion pressure and ensuring uniform wall thickness and dimensional accuracy of continuously extruded PTFE products. Ordinary ungraded PTFE fine powders are prone to uneven feeding and pressure fluctuation, resulting in wavy deformation and dimensional deviation of extruded products.

In the ram extrusion process, the flow characteristics of ASTM D4894 PTFE fine powders also determine the internal structural uniformity of semi-finished extruded products. Standardized fine powders have good pressure transmission performance, which can ensure uniform compression density of materials in the extrusion die, eliminate internal loose layers and void defects, and lay a foundation for high-quality sintering molding. After high-temperature sintering, extruded products made from ASTM D4894 qualified fine powders have dense internal structure, uniform density, stable mechanical properties, and no longitudinal cracking or layered separation problems PTFE TUBE.

ASTM D4894 also formulates flow stability testing methods for PTFE fine powders, evaluating the flow performance changes of powders after long-term storage, humidity exposure, and mechanical stirring. The standard ensures that extrusion-grade fine powders maintain stable fluidity in complex production environments, no moisture agglomeration and flow deterioration, avoiding production shutdown and product quality problems caused by powder performance changes. This standardized flow stability control greatly improves the continuous production efficiency and batch consistency of ram extrusion production lines.

At present, ASTM D4894 extrusion-specific PTFE fine powders have become the mainstream raw materials for industrial PTFE ram extrusion production, widely used in the continuous production of high-precision PTFE tubes, rods, and profile products. The standardized flow characteristics effectively solve the common problems of unstable extrusion size, low product qualification rate, and poor batch consistency in traditional extrusion production. With the development of high-precision continuous extrusion manufacturing technology, ASTM D4894 fine powder flow characteristic standards will further promote the standardized and high-precision development of PTFE extrusion molding industry.
