Weathering Resistance of PTFE Bridge Bearing Pads in Alpine Environments

Aug 20,2026

By:Amptfe

Alpine bridge environments are characterized by long-term low temperature, frequent freezing and thawing cycles, strong ultraviolet radiation, snow erosion and strong wind weather, which form severe multi-factor aging damage to bridge bearing components. Traditional bridge bearing pads are extremely prone to weathering failure in alpine environments: rubber bearings are brittle and cracked at low temperature, aged and hardened by strong ultraviolet rays; plastic bearings are frozen and cracked in freezing and thawing cycles, with sharp attenuation of friction and mechanical properties, seriously affecting the safe operation of alpine bridges. PTFE bridge bearing pads have excellent comprehensive weathering resistance, which can resist multi-factor environmental aging in alpine regions and maintain long-term stable working performance PTFE SHEET.

The low-temperature weathering resistance of PTFE bearing pads is the core advantage to adapt to alpine environments. In high-altitude alpine regions, the annual average temperature is low, and the extreme low temperature in winter can reach minus 40°C or even lower. Traditional bearing materials lose toughness at low temperature, become hard and brittle, and are easy to crack and damage under vibration and load. PTFE materials have excellent low-temperature toughness and cold resistance, and will not brittle, crack or deform under ultra-low temperature conditions. The molecular structure remains stable, and the friction performance and mechanical strength have no obvious attenuation, ensuring that the bearings can work normally in long-term low-temperature environments.

PTFE bridge bearing pads have strong freeze-thaw cycle weathering resistance. Alpine regions have frequent seasonal freezing and thawing and day-night freezing-thawing alternation. Water invades the interior of traditional bearing materials and freezes to expand, resulting in structural cracking and layered damage. PTFE materials have zero water absorption and dense non-porous structure, which completely prevents water penetration and freeze-thaw expansion damage. After thousands of freeze-thaw cycle tests, the structure and performance of PTFE TUBE and sheet bearing pads remain intact, without freeze-thaw aging failure.

Strong ultraviolet radiation resistance is another key weathering advantage of PTFE bearings in alpine environments. High-altitude alpine regions have thin air and strong ultraviolet radiation all year round, which has a strong aging and degradation effect on most polymer materials. Traditional bearing materials are prone to surface discoloration, cracking and performance degradation under long-term strong ultraviolet irradiation. PTFE materials have excellent anti-ultraviolet aging performance, and long-term strong light irradiation will not damage their molecular structure, maintaining stable surface smoothness and mechanical properties for a long time.

In addition, PTFE bridge bearing pads can resist snow erosion, wind sand abrasion and alpine atmospheric corrosion, adapting to the harsh comprehensive weathering environment of alpine regions. Long-term field operation monitoring of alpine bridges proves that PTFE bearing pads have no weathering aging failure after more than ten years of operation, and their comprehensive performance is far better than traditional bearing products. The excellent alpine weathering resistance makes PTFE bridge bearing pads the most reliable bearing solution for high-altitude and cold-region bridge projects, providing durable safety guarantees for the construction and operation of alpine transportation infrastructure.
