Role of PTFE in Intumescent Flame Retardant Coatings for Cable Insulation

Power cable insulation is a key link in power transmission safety, and cable fire accidents caused by circuit overload, short circuit and external high-temperature erosion are one of the main hidden dangers of urban power grid and industrial electrical fire accidents. Intumescent flame retardant coatings are the most widely used protective materials for cable fire prevention, which can expand and carbonize rapidly under high temperature and flame action to form a thick and porous heat-insulating carbon layer, isolating heat and oxygen to protect the cable insulation layer. However, traditional single intumescent coatings have obvious defects such as poor high-temperature stability, easy carbon layer cracking, and poor weather resistance. The addition of PTFE micro-powder and PTFE functional additives can effectively optimize the performance of intumescent flame retardant coatings and greatly improve the long-term fire protection ability of cable insulation systems PTFE SHEET.

PTFE plays a core role in improving the structural stability of the carbon layer of intumescent coatings. Traditional intumescent coatings form a loose and brittle carbon layer after expansion and carbonization. Under continuous flame impact and thermal radiation, the carbon layer is easy to crack and peel off, resulting in failure of heat insulation and flame retardant protection. After adding PTFE additives, the fluorine-containing groups decomposed by PTFE at high temperature can cross-link with the carbonized layer formed by intumescent agents, forming a dense, tough and high-temperature resistant fluorocarbon composite carbon layer. This composite carbon layer has strong structural toughness, will not crack or fall off under long-term flame erosion, and can maintain complete heat insulation and oxygen isolation protection for a long time, effectively avoiding cable insulation burnout and short-circuit faults.

PTFE significantly enhances the high-temperature flame retardant endurance and weather resistance of cable intumescent coatings. Traditional intumescent coatings are prone to aging and powdering under outdoor ultraviolet radiation, high temperature and humidity alternating environments, resulting in reduced coating adhesion and failure of flame retardant function. PTFE has excellent weather resistance, ultraviolet resistance and thermal stability, which can improve the surface compactness of the coating, isolate the erosion of external humid air and ultraviolet rays, and prevent coating aging. In high-temperature operating environments of power cables, PTFE can stabilize the thermal expansion and carbonization reaction of intumescent coatings, avoid premature failure of coating performance caused by local overheating, and ensure that the coating can respond quickly and form a protective carbon layer in case of sudden fire PTFE TUBE.

In terms of smoke suppression and anti-dripping performance, PTFE also provides important auxiliary flame retardant effects for intumescent coatings. Traditional cable flame retardant coatings will produce dense smoke and molten dripping during combustion, causing secondary fire spread. PTFE has excellent low-smoke and anti-dripping characteristics, which can inhibit the generation of toxic smoke during coating combustion and prevent high-temperature molten droplets from falling and igniting surrounding combustible materials. In addition, the ultra-low friction performance of PTFE can improve the surface smoothness of cable coatings, reduce friction and wear during cable laying and operation, and extend the service life of cable insulation protective layers.

The synergistic mechanism between PTFE and intumescent flame retardant systems realizes complementary advantages of multiple flame retardant mechanisms. The intumescent agent provides rapid expansion and carbonization flame retardancy in the initial stage of fire, while PTFE provides long-term high-temperature stability, structural reinforcement and smoke suppression protection in the later stage of combustion. The composite system makes up for the defects of single intumescent coating, and the overall flame retardant grade and safety performance are significantly improved. At present, PTFE-modified intumescent flame retardant coatings have been widely used in high-voltage power cables, industrial control cables, building fire-proof cables and other scenarios, becoming the mainstream high-performance cable fire protection solution.

To sum up, PTFE plays an irreplaceable role in strengthening carbon layer stability, improving weather resistance, suppressing smoke and preventing dripping in intumescent flame retardant coatings for cable insulation. With the continuous improvement of power grid fire safety standards, PTFE composite modified flame retardant coatings will be further popularized, providing more reliable long-term fire safety protection for power cable operation.
