PTFE Tensile Strength in Sealing and Gasket Applications

Sealing and gasket systems are core auxiliary components of industrial pipeline equipment, mechanical devices, and chemical production facilities, undertaking the key functions of medium isolation, leakage prevention, and pressure stabilization. PTFE gaskets and sealing parts have become mainstream sealing products in modern industry by virtue of their excellent chemical corrosion resistance, high and low temperature resistance, non-toxicity and anti-aging performance. In actual sealing working conditions, PTFE sealing components need to bear composite forces such as tensile force, compression force, shear force and thermal stress for a long time, and tensile strength has become the core mechanical index that determines the sealing stability and service life of gaskets PTFE SHEET.

Different from structural mechanical parts that pursue ultra-high tensile strength, PTFE sealing and gasket products need to achieve a balanced match of tensile strength, ductility and flexibility. Moderate tensile strength ensures that the gasket will not be torn or fractured during installation, compression and equipment operation, while excellent elongation at break enables the gasket to produce flexible deformation, fit the irregular surface of the equipment flange, and fill tiny gaps to achieve zero-leakage sealing effect. Pure PTFE gaskets have good ductility, but their low tensile strength and serious cold flow defects easily lead to permanent tensile deformation under long-term pipeline pressure, resulting in gasket relaxation, reduced sealing compactness and medium leakage failure.

Modified PTFE sealing materials effectively solve the mechanical defects of pure PTFE in sealing scenarios. Through fiber compounding and filler modification technology, the tensile strength of PTFE gaskets is significantly improved, and the cold flow deformation rate is greatly reduced. High-strength modified PTFE gaskets can maintain stable tensile performance under long-term high-pressure tension and compression alternating load, will not produce loose deformation or tensile fracture, and maintain lasting sealing performance. Expanded PTFE gaskets processed by special foaming and stretching processes have uniform micro-porous structure, which not only has excellent flexible fitting performance, but also ensures overall tensile structural stability, and is suitable for flange sealing of complex curved surfaces and uneven equipment PTFE TUBE.

In high-pressure and high-temperature sealing working conditions, the importance of PTFE tensile strength is more prominent. In chemical pipeline systems, industrial steam equipment and high-pressure hydraulic devices, gaskets need to withstand continuous internal pressure tension and high-temperature thermal stretching. High temperature will reduce the tensile strength of ordinary pure PTFE gaskets, making them prone to tensile damage and sealing failure. Modified high-temperature resistant PTFE sealing materials can maintain stable tensile strength under 200°C high-temperature working conditions, effectively resisting thermal tensile stress and pressure impact, and ensuring the long-term stable operation of high-temperature and high-pressure sealing systems.

The tensile uniformity of PTFE gaskets is also a key factor affecting sealing performance. High-precision processed PTFE sheet gaskets have uniform internal structure and consistent tensile strength in all directions, avoiding local tensile weakness and partial leakage caused by uneven stress. In contrast, low-quality gaskets with unbalanced tensile performance are easy to produce local tearing under uniform compression and tension, leading to sealing failure. Professional manufacturers adopt precise molding and cutting processes to ensure that each batch of PTFE gaskets has stable and uniform tensile mechanical properties.

At present, PTFE gaskets with optimized tensile performance have been widely used in petroleum, chemical, pharmaceutical, food, electric power and other industries. Its excellent tensile stability, flexible sealing performance and environmental adaptability make up for the defects of traditional rubber, asbestos and ordinary plastic gaskets.
