Spacecraft work in extreme cosmic environments including vacuum, extreme temperature difference, strong cosmic radiation and microgravity, which puts forward dual ultra-high requirements for thermal insulation and electrical insulation of equipment components. The temperature difference between sunlight area and shadow area of spacecraft in orbit can reach more than 200 degrees Celsius. Severe temperature difference changes and strong radiation will easily cause failure of ordinary insulation materials, affecting the normal operation of spacecraft electronic systems, power systems and structural components. PTFE-based composite insulation materials have both excellent thermal insulation performance and ultra-stable electrical insulation performance, becoming the core insulation material for modern spacecraft PTFE SHEET.
In terms of electrical insulation, PTFE-based materials have ultra-high dielectric strength and radiation resistance suitable for cosmic vacuum environment. The cosmic vacuum environment has no air insulation protection, and spacecraft electrical systems are prone to vacuum discharge and electric field breakdown. PTFE insulation materials can withstand ultra-high voltage electric field impact in vacuum, effectively isolating internal circuit current and external cosmic electric field interference, ensuring stable operation of spacecraft power supply, communication and control systems. Its stable molecular structure will not produce ionization and aging failure under long-term cosmic ray and particle radiation, solving the problem of short service life of ordinary insulation materials in space environment.
In terms of thermal insulation, PTFE-based insulation structures can effectively buffer extreme cosmic temperature differences and protect spacecraft equipment. PTFE materials have low thermal conductivity, which can isolate high-temperature radiation in sunlight area and prevent equipment overheating; at the same time, it can lock internal heat in ultra-low temperature shadow area to avoid equipment low-temperature freezing failure. Through composite lamination and precision processing technology, PTFE thermal insulation components form a stable thermal barrier structure, realizing precise temperature control of spacecraft internal equipment. A variety of structural parts processed from high-purity PTFE raw materials such as PTFE TUBE insulation sleeves and thermal insulation gaskets are widely used in spacecraft pipeline insulation and circuit thermal protection.
Spacecraft insulation materials have extremely strict safety and lightweight standards. PTFE-based insulation materials have low density and high strength, which can realize lightweight thermal and electrical dual insulation without increasing spacecraft load. It has non-combustible, low smoke and non-toxic characteristics, which will not produce harmful gas and combustion residues in vacuum environment, meeting the ultra-high safety standards of spacecraft closed cabin. In addition, PTFE materials have excellent vacuum stability, no volatile precipitation in vacuum environment, no pollution to spacecraft precision instruments and space environment, which is an essential environmental-friendly aerospace insulation material.
At present, PTFE-based thermal and electrical insulation systems have been successfully applied in satellite orbiters, manned spacecraft, deep space exploration probes and other aerospace equipment. With the continuous development of deep space exploration technology and long-term orbital residence spacecraft, PTFE composite insulation materials will be further optimized to adapt to more extreme cosmic environments, providing long-term stable dual insulation guarantee for spacecraft operation.
