Evaluating the Flame Retardant Efficiency of PTFE in High-Temperature Environments

High-temperature industrial environments, including high-temperature kiln equipment, thermal power systems, chemical reaction workshops, and high-voltage electrical operation sites, pose severe challenges to the flame retardant performance of polymer materials. In these scenarios, materials need to withstand long-term high-temperature thermal radiation, frequent temperature impact, and intermittent flame erosion, which easily cause thermal aging, pyrolysis and combustion failure of ordinary flame retardant materials. As a high-temperature resistant flame retardant polymer, PTFE’s flame retardant efficiency in high-temperature environments is a key index to measure its engineering application value. Scientific evaluation of its high-temperature flame retardant stability, self-extinguishing ability and thermal decomposition characteristics can provide reliable basis for the safety application of PTFE SHEET and PTFE structural parts in high-temperature fire-prone scenarios.

The flame retardant efficiency evaluation of PTFE in high-temperature environments mainly covers three core dimensions: thermal stability threshold, dynamic self-extinguishing performance, and residual flame retardant capacity after long-term high-temperature aging. Conventional flame retardant plastics rely on additive flame retardants to achieve fire resistance, but most organic flame retardants will decompose and fail at temperatures above 200°C, resulting in rapid attenuation of material flame retardancy. In contrast, PTFE has a continuous service temperature of 260°C and an instantaneous high-temperature resistance of up to 320°C. Long-term high-temperature heating below 260°C will not damage its molecular structure, and its flame retardant efficiency remains stable without obvious attenuation, which is the core advantage of PTFE in high-temperature flame retardant applications.

A large number of high-temperature flame retardant test data verify that PTFE maintains excellent flame retardant efficiency under continuous high-temperature thermal radiation. In the constant temperature environment of 200°C–250°C, after 1000 hours of continuous aging, the limiting oxygen index of PTFE materials is still stable above 90%, and it still has excellent self-extinguishing performance after flame impact, with no sustained combustion or flameless combustion phenomenon. In the medium and high temperature range of 300°C–450°C, although PTFE undergoes slight surface pyrolysis, the internal molecular structure remains stable, and the pyrolysis products can still capture combustion free radicals, effectively inhibiting flame propagation, and the overall flame retardant efficiency is far better than modified engineering plastics and rubber flame retardant materials.

The flame retardant efficiency of PTFE in high-temperature environments is closely related to material purity and processing technology. High-purity sintered PTFE has uniform molecular structure and high thermal stability, with stable flame retardant efficiency in full high-temperature working temperature range. Impure PTFE materials containing low-temperature auxiliary agents and processing residues will have local pyrolysis defects in high-temperature environments, resulting in reduced flame retardant uniformity and decreased overall fire resistance. Precision-processed PTFE TUBE and skived PTFE sheets have dense and uniform internal structure, no residual stress and impurity defects, and can maintain consistent high flame retardant efficiency in long-term high-temperature operation, avoiding local fire failure caused by material heterogeneity.

In ultra-high temperature transient fire scenarios above 500°C, the flame retardant efficiency of PTFE will decline significantly, showing obvious stage performance changes. In the initial stage of flame impact, PTFE can still rely on free radical capture and barrier layer protection to suppress flame spread, with excellent instantaneous flame retardant effect. However, with the extension of ultra-high temperature action time, a large number of C-F bonds break, the material undergoes violent thermal decomposition, and the inert protective layer is destroyed, resulting in gradual loss of flame retardant ability. This staged failure feature is an important basis for evaluating the application boundary of PTFE in extreme high-temperature fire environments.

Compared with other high-temperature flame retardant materials such as silicone rubber and modified polyimide, PTFE has higher comprehensive flame retardant efficiency in medium and high temperature environments. Silicone rubber is easy to powder and lose protection in high-temperature flame, while polyimide has high cost and poor processing performance. PTFE balances high-temperature resistance, flame retardant stability and processing practicability, and is the most cost-effective high-temperature flame retardant polymer material in industrial fields. Through scientific evaluation of high-temperature flame retardant efficiency, targeted material selection and performance optimization can be realized to ensure the long-term fire safety and operational stability of high-temperature industrial equipment.
