Defect Mechanisms and Mitigation in PTFE Isostatic Molding

Although PTFE isostatic molding has outstanding advantages of uniform density and low defect rate compared with traditional compression molding, improper process parameter setting, raw material pretreatment defects, tooling abnormalities, and operation irregularities will still lead to occasional molding defects such as micro-voids, surface pits, local low density, blank cracking, and dimensional deviation. Clarifying the formation mechanism of various defects in isostatic molding and formulating targeted mitigation and prevention measures are the key to further improving the product qualification rate and batch stability of PTFE isostatic molding production PTFE SHEET.

Micro-void and internal cavity defects are the most common minor defects in PTFE isostatic molding, mainly caused by incomplete air exhaust and uneven powder filling. During the mold filling process, air is easily trapped in the gap between powder particles and the dead corner of the mold cavity. If the low-pressure pre-compression exhaust time is insufficient, the trapped air cannot be completely discharged, forming tiny closed voids inside the blank after high-pressure compaction. In addition, agglomerated PTFE powder and uneven particle size distribution will lead to local poor filling and residual gaps, resulting in void defects. The mitigation measures include standardized powder sieving and homogenization, extended low-pressure exhaust time, and layered vibration filling process to ensure full air discharge and uniform powder filling.

Blank cracking and edge chipping defects are mostly caused by unreasonable pressure relief and demolding operation. Sudden rapid pressure relief will cause instantaneous internal and external pressure difference of the blank, resulting in tensile cracking of the dense compacted structure. Improper demolding force and uneven mold separation will lead to edge damage and local cracking of special-shaped blanks. The effective mitigation strategy is to adopt staged gradient pressure relief technology to slowly release system pressure, balance internal and external stress of the blank, and match with flexible rapid demolding tooling and standardized demolding operation specifications to avoid mechanical damage to the blank PTFE TUBE.

Local low density and density deviation defects are derived from pressure transmission unevenness and tooling abnormalities. Uneven mold wall thickness, local elastic aging of flexible molds, and blocked pressure transmission channels will lead to insufficient local pressure on the blank, resulting in low local density and inconsistent overall compactness. For large-size and special-shaped blanks, unreasonable pressure parameter matching will also cause edge pressure attenuation and density difference. The mitigation measures include regular mold inspection and replacement, pressure channel cleaning and calibration, and differentiated pressure parameter setting according to product structure to ensure full and uniform pressure transmission in all parts.

Surface contamination and pit defects are mainly related to pressure medium purity and production environment cleanliness. Impurities, oil stains, and residual particles in the pressure medium will adhere to the surface of the blank during molding, forming surface pits and impurity defects after sintering. Dust and floating particles in the production environment will also pollute the powder and mold cavity. The prevention and mitigation scheme includes regular filtration and replacement of pressure transmission media, dust-free closed molding environment management, and pre-mold cleaning and impurity removal processes to ensure ultra-clean molding conditions.

Dimensional deformation and shrinkage deviation defects are caused by unstable pressure holding time and inconsistent sintering matching. Insufficient pressure holding time leads to unstable blank structure and large shrinkage fluctuation, while mismatched sintering temperature curve will aggravate deformation. The mitigation method is to solidify standardized pressure holding parameters, establish product-specific sintering curve database, and equip with post-molding annealing treatment to eliminate residual stress and stabilize dimensional accuracy.

Through systematic defect mechanism analysis and targeted mitigation measures, the defect rate of PTFE isostatic molding can be controlled below 0.5%, realizing high-quality and zero-defect batch production. Standardized process management, regular equipment calibration, and strict raw material control jointly build a perfect defect prevention system, further giving play to the quality advantages of isostatic molding technology.
