CNC Turning of PTFE: Surface Finish and Tolerance Control

CNC turning is the core processing technology for rotary PTFE components such as shaft sleeves, sealing rings, insulating gaskets, and cylindrical structural parts. PTFE rotary parts are widely used in precision mechanical transmission, hydraulic sealing, electrical insulation, and chemical anti-corrosion equipment, which put forward extremely strict requirements on surface finish and dimensional tolerance accuracy. Due to PTFE’s low hardness, good toughness, and obvious thermal expansion characteristics, conventional turning processes are prone to problems such as surface tool marks, spiral textures, dimensional deviation, and roundness errors. Surface finish control is the primary goal of PTFE precision turning. The smoothness of the turning surface directly affects the friction performance, sealing effect, and assembly accuracy of rotary parts. Reasonable process layout and operation specifications further improve the stability of turning quality. Rough turning and finish turning are strictly separated in PTFE processing: rough turning removes excess blanks with large cutting depth and high efficiency, while finish turning adopts ultra-fine cutting parameters to ensure surface finish and dimensional accuracy. The secondary clamping error is eliminated through one-time clamping and full-process forming technology, avoiding positioning deviation caused by repeated disassembly and assembly. For thin-walled rotary PTFE parts with weak rigidity, auxiliary support fixtures are used to prevent workpiece deformation and vibration during turning, ensuring uniform wall thickness and stable structural size.
