Chemical Resistance and Long-Term Reliability of PTFE Cables

Industrial electrical equipment in chemical, petroleum, pharmaceutical, new energy battery, and environmental protection industries has been working in complex corrosive media for a long time, and cable insulation corrosion failure is one of the main causes of industrial electrical safety accidents and equipment downtime. Traditional rubber, PVC, and polyethylene cables are prone to swelling, dissolution, cracking, and aging when exposed to acid, alkali, organic solvents, and industrial oil, resulting in decreased insulation resistance, circuit leakage, and short-circuit faults. PTFE is recognized as the most chemically inert engineering material in the industry, and its stable fluorocarbon molecular structure does not react with almost all industrial chemical media. PTFE cables can resist the erosion of strong acid solutions such as sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and nitric acid, strong alkali solutions such as sodium hydroxide, and various organic solvents such as alcohol, ketone, benzene, and ester. Many industrial corrosive environments have high-temperature and high-pressure characteristics, and corrosive media often exist in the form of high-temperature steam and high-pressure atomization, which puts forward higher requirements on the medium resistance of cables. PTFE cables maintain stable chemical inertness under high-temperature and high-pressure corrosive conditions, without thermal decomposition and chemical deterioration. The matching use of corrosion-resistant PTFE TUBE protective sleeves forms a fully enclosed anti-corrosion protection system for cable harnesses, comprehensively isolating the erosion of internal and external corrosive media and ensuring the long-term stable operation of internal circuits in all-round corrosive environments.

Long-term operational reliability is another core advantage of PTFE cables in corrosive environments. Traditional anti-corrosion cables mostly adopt modified materials with limited anti-corrosion performance, which will gradually age and fail after 1–3 years of use in corrosive environments. PTFE cables have ultra-strong anti-aging performance, and their chemical and electrical properties will not decay after long-term operation in corrosive environments. The insulation layer has a smooth surface, which is not easy to adsorb chemical residues and dirt, avoiding insulation layer pollution and gap blockage, reducing equipment maintenance frequency, and realizing maintenance-free long-term operation in harsh industrial environments.

In addition to chemical corrosion resistance, PTFE cables retain excellent electrical insulation and mechanical stability in corrosive environments. They will not have insulation resistance drop and dielectric breakdown due to medium erosion, maintaining stable circuit insulation and signal transmission accuracy. Their excellent tensile strength and wear resistance ensure that the cable structure is complete during long-term equipment operation, without cracking and damage caused by medium corrosion and mechanical friction.

At present, PTFE cables with excellent chemical resistance and long-term reliability are widely used in chemical plant electrical wiring, petroleum exploration and refining equipment circuits, pharmaceutical sterile workshop electrical systems, sewage treatment corrosive environment wiring, and lithium battery chemical production equipment circuits. They effectively reduce the failure rate of industrial electrical equipment, extend the service life of wiring systems, and create stable and safe electrical operation conditions for corrosive industrial scenarios.
